As the wrestling team gears toward another season as defending HNAC Conference Champs, there are many shoes to be filled. Going into the 2019-2020 season, they have lost their 2 senior captains. These 2 men were a huge part of the team. They showed dedication, incredible technique, and most importantly, leadership. As we approach the new season, unfortunately, we have no senior wrestlers. The underclassmen of the team are going to have to step up and show our opponents and new upcoming freshmen what the Winamac Wrestling team is all about.
According to Coach Hook, as of right now, we have 5 Juniors, 13 Sophomores, and 5 Freshman. Junior, Jason Tankersley, says “I feel pretty good about our team right now; it’s promising.” He also says “The energy is up a lot compared to last year.” When the wrestling room is dry and quiet, that’s when you know the wrestlers don’t want to be there. Having high energy will make wrestling practice, as awful as they make it sound, that much better. Although there are no Seniors on the team, there will be several times where an underclassmen will have to wrestle an upperclassmen during a competition. Jason says “Don’t be intimidated by people’s age. Freshmen beat the crap out of Seniors all the time.” Wrestling is a tough sport, and these 23 guys are willing to put their time, sweat, and blood, into the sport they love.
The wrestling team will start their season with a home meet against North White at 6:00 p.m. on November 26th. Come out and support your Warriors!
